Spiritual Ignorance
. . even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you, . . .
1 Corinthians 1:6
The word testimony is Marturus, which means "witness." The witness of Christ was confirmed in them. How was it confirmed? By the Holy Spirit.
Notice how much the Holy Spirit was involved in the Book of Corinthians. In every chapter, you find the work of the Holy Spirit. What was the problem in the Corinthian church? The Holy Spirit.
How could the Holy Spirit be a problem? Think about it. The Corinthian believers were abusing the power and the gifts of the Holy Spirit, so there was no fault with the Holy Spirit. The fault was at the feet of the believers in Corinth. Because they were spiritually immature, they were carnal Christians, and they were abusing the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Paul wants to make sure we really and truly understand this problem, because it can happen to each and every person who comes to Christ, but does not take the time to be rooted and grounded in the Word of God. Without spiritual maturity, we can all fall victim to abusing the spiritual gifts.
When we read and study God's Word, we grow in our knowledge of God and the gifts He imparts to us. Then, we can be responsible in the use of all things spiritual. Without the leading and guiding of the Holy Spirit, we will all be ignorant of the Word of God, and without the Word, we are ignorant of God.
Ignorance is the mother of all mischief. ~Thomas Hall~
